Skin Tags Q & A
What are skin tags?
Skin tags are painless, non-cancerous growths that form on your skin. They’re attached to a small stalk, called a peduncle, and usually occur near places where your skin folds. Skin tags aren’t a serious health concern, but they can negatively affect your confidence or self-esteem. They can also become irritated or infected if they rub up against your clothing.
At Nguyen Medical Group, the team provides safe, effective skin tag removal using traditional outpatient procedures like minimally-invasive surgery and cryotherapy (freezing). If you’re living with one or more skin tags, don’t wait to seek treatment.
Where do skin tags form?
Skin tags can form anywhere on your body. Some of the most common locations where they occur include the:
- Armpits
- Groin
- Thighs
- Eyelids
- Neck
In women, skin tags can also form underneath the breasts.
Are there different types of skin tags?
At Nguyen Medical Group, the team diagnoses and treats several types of skin tags, including:
Traditional skin tags
Traditional skin tags are small in size and typically don’t require treatment. They remain the same size and don’t put you at risk of other more serious health problems.
Keratosis
Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition that causes dry, rough bumps of skin to form on your upper arms, cheeks, or buttocks. Keratosis bumps usually don’t hurt or itch, but they can negatively affect your skin’s appearance.
Benign lesions
A benign lesion is a non-cancerous bump or lump that can occur anywhere on your skin. Benign skin lesions can occur anywhere on the body, but they’re especially common on the stomach, chest, arms, or legs.
How are skin tags diagnosed?
To diagnose a skin tag, your Nguyen Medical Group provider reviews your medical history, asks you about your symptoms, and conducts a physical exam. During your physical, your provider looks for small growths of skin connected to a stalk.
Skin tags are usually smaller than two millimeters in size and are soft to the touch and smooth or wrinkly in appearance. Most skin tags are skin-colored. However, some are dark or black, either due to hyperpigmentation or poor circulation.
How are skin tags treated?
Treatment of skin tags depends on the size, location, and severity of the growth. For minor skin tags, the team provides onsite outpatient surgery or cryotherapy treatments. If your Nguyen Medical Group provider suspects you have a cancerous or malignant lesion, they can refer you to a dermatologist in the area.
